Khaleda denies meeting with govt officials

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday denied having had a meeting with a group of public servants at her Gulshan office recently.Khaleda said that the intelligence usually provided a government with wrong information at its ‘bad time’ and left the the government at an opportune moment. ‘These people will also leave you [prime minister Sheikh Hasina] at an opportune moment,’ Khaleda said.Khaleda made the claims while addressing a convention of former and current student leaders at the Institution of Engineers,Bangladesh organised by DUCSU and All-Party Student Alliance of 1990 for ‘restoring’ democracy.Referring to Sheikh Hasina’s calling Tarique Rahman a ‘beast’ for making derogatory comments on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by calling him a ‘razakar’, the BNP chairperson urged her arch political foe to hold her tongue and defended her son saying that what BNP stated was ‘correct’ and ‘based on information’.She iterated that she would call for anti-government movement ‘anytime’, warning that this time round the streets of Dhaka would not remain empty.
Khaleda urged her party leaders and activists to stay prepared to take to the streets braving police firing and tear gas to realise the demand for a free, fair and inclusive election under a neutral authority to establish a ‘people’s government’.

Khaleda urged the police not to open fire on the opposition leaders and activists during ‘peaceful’ movement and said that her party along with the people this time would carry out the movement replying  to the ‘language of bullet’.She urged other political parties outside her alliance to carry out movement simultaneously to dislodge the ‘repressive’ government for ‘restoring’ democracy and people’s voting rights. The BNP chairperson, who is facing trial in two cases of graft, demanded revival of the corruption cases filed against Sheikh Hasina asserting that the trials of cases against Hasina must be held if those filed cases against thev BNP men were to continue.Khaleda said five cases were filed against her  during the last military-backed caretaker government while 15 cases were filed against
Hasina at that time. She wondered how the cases against Hasina were withdrawn. The corruption cases filed against Hasina and others involving the purchase of MiG 29 and Frigate after 1996 were ‘serious’ ones, she said.Questioning the neutrality of judges, the BNP chairperson said judges held trial seeing faces of the accused and if they belonged to Awami League, they were acquitted.

She urged the judges to discharge their responsibilities neutrally in dispensation of justice. She warned that the judges who did ‘injustice’ would have to suffer ‘tough punishment’ and answer to Allah.Referring to her reported meeting with bureaucrats at her Gulshan office on December 4,  Khaleda said what was the problem if the government officials met with her as she was a three times prime minister.‘It is nothing unlawful,’ she added. The BNP chairperson’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan on December 4 claimed that around 100 retired and serving public servants had attended a meeting with Khaleda Zia to share their ‘miseries’ with her.
She said if Hasina could hold meeting and take tea with BDR muniteers and with terrorists and militants, what was wrong in government officers’ meeting with her (Khaleda).About the oil spills from a sunken tanker in Sundarban, she said the ship which had hit the oil tanker was empty and an oil tanker was not supposed to capsize after being hit by an empty vessel. She said the owner of the ship might be an Awami League sympathizer and that was why he was not caught.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, leaders Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, former DUCSU GS  Khairul Kabir Khokon and former AGS Nazimuddin Alam also addressed the convention chaired by BNP joint secretary generl and former DUCSU VP Amanullah Aman.
