Teachers outside MPO coverage postpone protests for a month

After holding nonstop sit-in for four days to press the demand for getting monthly pay order, better known as MPO, under which the government pays salaries and other benefits, hundreds of teachers and employees of non-government schools, colleges, technical institutions and madrassahs on Sunday postponed their demonstrations for one month.
On Thursday the protesters had begun their sit in on Topkhana Road in front of the National Press Club under the banner of Non-MPO Educational Institutions’ Teachers and Employees’ Federation.
The federation announced that that the deprived teachers and employees would resume their demonstrations if their demands were not met within a month.
The federation president Golam Mahmudun Nabi informed the deprived teachers and employees in the afternoon that the education minister Dipu Moni gave the assurance that she would look into their issues and would also arrange a meeting between the teachers and prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
‘We would take to the streets in strong way after one month if our demands are not met,’ he said.
According to the federation, over 75,000 teachers and employees of 5,242 educational intuitions across the country are still outside the MPO coverage.
Earlier, these deprived teachers and employees held demonstrations twice — from December 2017 to January 2018 and again from June 2018 to July 2018, on the same venue to press their demand for inclusion in the MPO coverage.
