Shuvo Pohela Boishakh

Bengali New Year is referred to in Bengali as "New Year" (Bengali: নববর্ষ Nôbobôrsho, from Sanskrit Nava(new) varṣa(year)) or "First of Boishakh" (Bengali: পহেলা বৈশাখ Pôhela Boishakh or পয়লা বৈশাখ Pôela Boishakh). Nobo means new and Borsho means year.

Bangladesh Assessment 2013

Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League (AL)-led Government, which came to power on January 6, 2009, has consolidated its secular commitments through 2012, reining in Islamist extremist groups and targeting the Left Wing Extremist (LWE) movement in the country. Overall political stability has been established, though some untoward incidents have, nonetheless, occurred; these have largely been instigated by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing, the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) with the principal objective of disrupting the ongoing War Crimes (WC) Trials.

[Original post by Mahmud Rahman was published on bdnews24.com ]

At a time when our eyes are riveted on the present, and that present itself obsessed with the past, at a time when cries are being made that will shape our tomorrow , I would like to plead for time to think about the future that is being demanded.

Shahbagh has called for the banning of the Jamaat-e-Islami. In the press and social media, in parliament and ministerial podiums, we hear echoes of the same call. Meanwhile Jamaat’s men create frenzy on the streets, adding fuel to the cries for a ban. If such a ban is imposed, what happens afterwards? Will the problem of Jamaat disappear with a law?

Britons of Bangladesh 2010

Britons of Bangladesh 2010

Whether it is about reviewing our country’s achievements, or evaluating performance of the people who have been affecting it, Tritiyo Matra finds it more sensible when it includes opinion and judgment of the common people and reflects preferences of the mass.

Last year Tritiyo Matra introduced the first permanent “Public Opinion Survey Panel” of the people, by the people and for the people of Bangladesh to establish a common panel with the common people, and invites everyone to evaluate the ones, who's performance have directly/ indirectly impacted performance of our nation last year.

To select “Britons of Bangladesh 2010” Tritiyo Matra has come up with a list of notable Britons, not necessarily the most admired, but those who left an indelible mark in our minds in year 2010. To facilitate this opinion survey, we are about to start our polls on different categories, one by one to continue throughout the month of January 2011, until we reach our top 10 and final Briton of the Year.

So we request our panel of judges (common people) for their takes on who had played the most significant roles over the past year, to claim the following titles?

POLITICIAN OF THE YEAR 2010

শুভ ১লা বৈশাখ ১৪১৮

Shuvo Pohela Boishakh

Bengali New Year (বাংলা নববর্ষ Bangla Nôbobôrsho) or Pohela Boishakh (পহেলা বৈশাখ Pôhela Boishakh or পয়লা বৈশাখ Pôela Boishakh) is the first day of the Bengali calendar, celebrated in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, and in Bengali communities in Assam and Tripura. It coincides with the New Year's Days of numerous Southern Asian calendars.

Pohela Boishakh connects all ethnic Bengalis irrespective of religious and regional differences. In India, in West Bengal and Assam it is a public (state) holiday and is publicly celebrated in mid April. In Bangladesh, it is a national holiday celebrated around 14 April according to the official amended calendar designed by the Bangla Academy.
