Profile:

Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal (21 February 1952 – 07 November 2019) was a Bangladeshi politician, a valiant freedom fighter and Member of Parliament represented Chittagong 7 and 8 constituency. He served as the Executive President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. He was known as a great orator in parliament.

Badal was born in Boakhali upazila of Chittagong. He studied at the Chittagong Collegiate School. Badal was involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League in the 1960s. He was also at the forefront of all mass movements in the post-war period and the anti-Ayub movement and actively took part in the liberation war as a guerrilla. He was one of the key persons who tried to prevent offloading of firearms at Chattogram port during the war.

Badal joined Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in the 1970s and was a central committee member of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal in the 1980s. He joined Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal afterwards and was elected as an Executive President.

Badal was elected lawmaker thrice in a row from Chattogram 7 and 8 constituency, beginning in 2008. Over the years, he made a reputation for himself as a great orator in the House. He kept the Parliament alive with his exceptional speech. He was vocal against corruption and lack of good governance, although his party was a part of the government. On June 2015, he called upon the speaker of the parliament to issue a ruling to prevent the money laundering from Bangladeshi banks.

In 2016, Badal and Sharif Nurul Ambia led a breakaway faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The split happened after the President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Hasanul Haq Inu, appointed Shirin Akhter, Member of Parliament, and the General Secretary of the Party. The appointment was opposed by Badal and Sharif Nurul Ambia. He blamed Inu for the split in the party.

On March 2017, Badal criticised Human Rights Watch for its report on Bangladesh and denied allegations of torture against the government.

Badal died on 7 November 2019 at the age of 67 while undergoing treatment at Devi Shetty's Narayana Hrudalayala Hospitals of Bangalore.
