Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun (born 12 January 1964) is a Bangladeshi police officer and the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh Police since 30 September 2022. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on 22nd September 2022 that has been effected from September 30th 2022. Previously he was appointed as the incumbent Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was made the DG of RAB in April 2020. Prior to join RAB, he was the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Mamun was born in the village of Sreehail under Shalla Upazila in Sunamganj District in a noble Muslim family. He received Honors and Post Graduate Degree in Sociology from Chittagong University.
Mamun joined Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1989. He was promoted to Additional IG grade-I on October 2021. During his illustrious career, he served in various units of Bangladesh Police with great honesty, efficiency, dedication and professionalism. He served with distinction in Police Headquarters, District, Range, DMP, APBN, CID and lastly RAB. During his long career he served as Assistant Commissioner in DMP, Assistant Superintendent of Police in APBN, Circle ASP in Brahmanbaria, Sirajganj and Chandpur Districts, Additional Superintendent of Police in Chandpur District and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police in DMP. He also served as Superintendent of Police in Nilphamari district, Deputy Commissioner in Dhaka Metropolitan Police and as Deputy Inspector General in Mymensingh and Dhaka Range and Police Headquarters.
During his tenure as CID Chief (Additional IGP), Mamun took initiatives to increase the capacity of central forensic labs as well as labs at departmental level, resulting in faster forensic examination of case evidence and speeding up the process of completing investigation of complex cases. He also stressed on training to increase the efficiency and capacity of policemen in investigating cases and to improve the quality of investigations. Mamun took over as the Director General of Bangladesh Police's Elite Force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on April 14, 2020. Under his visionary leadership and guidance, RAB's exemplary role in dealing with Corona has been widely appreciated.
Mamun has been awarded the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) and the President's Police Medal (PPM) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Bangladesh Police. In the international arena, he has played important roles in UN peacekeeping missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liberia and Darfur.
