Ataur Rahman Dhaly (born 13 September 1950) is a Bangladeshi progressive political figure, a true and objective critic. He was the founder General Secretary of Chhatra Maitri. He joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 2016. Currently, he is serving as an advisor to the BNP Chairperson.

Dhaly was born in Lakcharchar village of Madanganj in Narayanganj district. His ancestral residence was in Matlab Upazila of Chandpur district. However, he spent his entire childhood, adolescence and student life in Dhaka. His father was martyred freedom fighter Aflatun Dhaly, mother Amirunnessa. They are 4 brothers and 2 sisters- Dhaly is the youngest. He passed SSC from Bandar High School in 1967 and HSC from Tolaram College in 1969. After that, he completed his graduation and post-graduation in Economics from Dhaka University.

Dhaly has been keeping the spirit of liberation war alive. So he used to dream of changing the day. He spent a lot of time of his life on how to establish the rights of workers, farmers and hardworking people. For that purpose, he created 'Chhatra Maitri' on December 16, 1980 with the combination of some active student organizations and created a great stir in the country and abroad. Then thousands of students in colleges and universities of the country united with this organization and found the direction of progressive politics. Dhaly was the founding General Secretary of Chhatra Maitri from 1980 to 1984.

Dhaly was inactive in politics for a long time and stayed in the United States. Sometimes he came to Bangladesh and kept in touch with Chhatra Maitri. Dhaly joined the BNP on April 16, 2016, handing over a bouquet of flowers to Khaleda Zia at the BNP Chairperson's political office in Gulshan, with the intention of becoming active again in politics.

Dhaly's favorite political figure is Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani. Dhaly is a learned man - he reads books in his leisure. His interest is in sociology and political history books.
