Blockade continues, hartal underway with no major incidents

The 24-hour general strike in Dhaka metropolitan city alongside the non-stop road-rail-waterway blockade enforced by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance was underway without any major incidents.In the capital, the number of commuter buses was increasing with the passage of time. Rickshaws and CNG-run auto-rickshaws dominated the city streets. Additional police were deployed in the key points of the city.Meanwhile, BNP-led coalition also announced a dawn-to-dusk hartal in nine districts including Dhaka for Thursday.


The strike in Dhaka, Gazipur, Tangail, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj and Mymensingh was passing peacefully.The reason for strike, BNP-led alliance cited, protesting cases against its chairperson Khaleda Zia, and murder, arrest and persecution of the activists and leaders of the alliance.Hartal was also called in Feni, Madaripur, Habiganj and Cox’s Bazar districts.BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia announced the indefinite blockade on January 5 as the government did not allow her party to hold a protest rally in the capital.
