Inform cops about any suspicious acts: PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday called on the people to stand against extremism and inform law enforcement agencies about any suspicious act to avert any untoward incident in Bangladesh.
‘I urge the people that they just inform the law enforcement agencies about any suspicious movement in the country. We do not want any terror incident anywhere in the world,’ she said while responding to a supplementary question from ruling Awami League lawmaker Shahiduzzaman Sarker.
The prime minster said the extremists did not have any religion or country.
‘A militant is a militant, a terrorist is a terrorist. They have no religion, no country,’ she said, adding that her government controlled extremism and bombing in Bangladesh with an iron fist.
Hasina came up with the remarks after a wave of blasts at churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday left over 300 people killed and about 500 injured.
Some 40 children, including Zayan Chowdhury, grandson of her cousin and Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, were killed in the coordinated bomb attacks on three churches and four hotels in Colombo, claiming a total of 321 lives.
Emotion-choked Hasina told parliament that Zayan was also killed in the blast while Zayan’s father Mashiul Haque Chowdhury had been fighting for life with severe injuries.
Seeking eternal peace for Zayan, she said that it was not only Zayan, about 40 children were killed in the blasts.‘Zayan was buried today, but his father was not informed about his death. His father was asking for him,’ she said, urging every citizen not to involve in such heinous act.
‘I have no word to condemn such heinous act. I do not know what they want to achieve through such crimes. The innocent minor does not have any fault,’ she said, adding that the acts of extremism could not bring welfare to the people.
The prime minister said that Islam was the religion of peace. ‘But a section of people undermine the religion. Some fanatics are carrying out the attacks,’ she said.
Hasina also spoke about the killing of Nusrat Jahan Rafi who was burnt to death in Feni recently reportedly for fighting against sexual abuse of her by her madrassash principal.
‘It is a man-made terrorism. They burned Nusrat, who made a protest against a wrongdoing, to death pouring her with kerosene. Such an inhuman act cannot bring positive result for the humanity,’ she said.
The parliament also unanimously adopted obituary references on a number of distinguished personalities, including a former minister, five members of parliament and Sheikh Selim’s grandson Zayan.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary references with brief resumes on those who died after prorogation of the first session of the 11th parliament.
The references were adopted for the death of former minister Sheikh Abdul Aziz, five members of parliament Abu Saleh Mohammad Sayeed Dulal, Monjur Ahmed, Tazul Islam Mohammad Faruque, Arzu Mand Banu, Rahima Akhter and Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, Zayan Chowdhury, former adviser to caretaker government ASM Shahjahan, freedom fighter M Abdul Khaleque Sheikh, Alor Feriwala Palan Sarker, Senior Journalist and former Press Institute of Bangladesh director general Shah Alamgir, poet Al Mahmud, singer Shahnaj Rahmatullah and comedian Tele Samad and Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Madrassah in Feni, among others.
