KIBRIA MURDER CASE : Babar, Haris, Arif, 29 others indicted

A Habiganj special tribunal on Tuesday framed charges against 32 people, including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s political adviser Haris Chowdhury and former state minister for home Luthfuzzaman Babar, in the case filed in connection with the killing of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.
Md Atabullah, the judge of Habiganj special tribunal-1, accepted the charge sheet submitted by the police and fixed February 29 to begin recording testimonies of prosecution witnesses in the case.
The court’s public prosecutor, Akbar Hossain Jitu, said the court also ordered arrest of the fugitive accused in the case.
Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Bangladesh Nationalist Party central committee member and also the suspended mayor of Sylhet city, GK Gaus, the party’s Habiganj district unit general secretary and also the Habiganj municipality’s suspended mayor, and Harkat-ul-Jihad executive chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, are the charge-sheeted accused, among others.
Among the accused, 14, including Babar, Arif and Gaus, are in jail, 8 free on bail and the rest 10, including Haris Chowdhury, are absconding, court officials said.
Awami League leader Kibria, his nephew Shah Manzurul Huda and three local AL leaders — Abdur Rahim, Abul Hossain and Siddeq Ali — were killed and more than 50 injured in a grenade attack on a rally at Baibyer Bazar in Habiganj on January 27, 2005.
Habiganj AL general secretary Abdul Mazid Khan filed two cases with the Kotwali police on January 28.
On October 13 in 2014, the district additional chief judicial magistrate, SM Humayun Kabir, referred the case to the district and session judge’s court to frame charges against the accused.
Later, on November 13 of the year, Criminal Investigation Department regional senior assistant superintendent Meherunnessa Parul submitted the supplementary charge sheet to the Habiganj Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court for the third time accusing 32 people in the case as Asma Kibria, the widow of Kibria, alleged that many of the perpetrators were not named in the initial charge sheets.
