Sheikh Mujib’s Homecoming Day observed

Homecoming Day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh, was observed across the country in a befitting manner on Sunday.
Sheikh Mujib returned to the free soil Bangladesh on January 10, 1972 following his release from solitary confinement for nine months and a half in a Pakistan prison during the country’s War of Independence.
A human sea received him at Tejgaon Airport.
The ruling Awami League’s programmes marking the day started by hoisting national and party flags at the party central office, Bangabandhu Bhaban, and party offices across the country at 6:30am.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, paid tributes to her father Sheikh Mujib by placing a wreath at his mural in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32.
Hasina stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect. She was flanked by the party central leaders while cabinet members placed another wreath at the mural on behalf of her party.
Later, leaders of AL and its associate bodies, including Juba League, Chhatra League, Sramik League, Mahila Awami League, Swechchhasebak League, Juba Mahila League, Krishak League and socio-cultural organisations and professional bodies laid wreaths at the mural of Sheikh Mujib.
Talking to reporters at Dhanmondi 32, AL general secretary Syed Ahraful Islam said it was unfortunate that the local collaborators of Pakistani occupation force were still hatching conspiracy against Bangladesh living on this soil even 44 years after the independence.
Senior AL leader Amir Hossain Amu said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia started her movement the day when the Awami League-led government started the trial of war criminals.
‘Her [Khaleda] movement is only for saving the war criminals, not for the welfare of people. Actually she wants to implement the agenda of Pakistan in Bangladesh,’ he said.
Marking the day, the Awami League will hold a public rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan at 2:30pm today. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will address the rally.
