2nd phase of Bishwa Ijtema begins

The second phase of Bishwa Ijtema began on Friday with thousands of Muslims converging on the bank of the River Turag in Gazipur, seeking peace and revival of Islamic tenets.
The congregation’s inaugural session began after Fajr prayers with a sermon by Indian scholar Maulana Abdur Rahman.
Huge columns of devotees began streaming into the venue since dawn.
Dressed in traditional robes and prayer caps, thousands from far-flung villages and towns and across the world joined the gathering to attend the Jumma prayers that started around 1:40pm.
Hafez Maulana Mohammad Zobair Hasan of Kakrail Tablgh Mosque conducted the prayers. Deputy speaker of parliament Fazle Rabbi Mia, minister for liberation war affairs AKM Mozammel Haque, law maker for Gaizpur-2 constituency Jahid Ahsan Russel, acting mayor of Gazipur city Asdur Rahman Kiron, superintendent of Gazipur police Harun-ur Rashid, among others, offered their Jumma prayers at the venue.
On the day, a devotee, Abdur Rahman, 60, of Gabtoli in Bogra died of cardiac arrest, said Adam Ali, one of the organisers of the event.
Islamic scholars in their sermons laid emphasis on iman (faith), amal (action) and akhlak (character).
In the second phase, people from Jhenaidah, Jamalpur, Faridpur, Netrakona, Narsingdi, Comilla, Kurigram, Rajshahi, Feni, Thakurgaon, Sunamganj, Bogra, Khulna, Chuadanga, and Pirojpur were attending the congregation.
