MOGHBAZAR-MOUCHAK FLYOVER : Deadline to be extended until June 2017

Deadline for the construction of Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover project is likely to be extended till June 2017 causing the sufferings of people who live in or travel through the area.
The government may also increase the project cost by about 57 per cent to Tk 1,218.89 from existing Tk 772.7 crore, said officials concerned.
The executive committee of the National Economic Council, headed by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, is scheduled for today to review the proposals at its a meeting, the officials said.
They said that the proposals were likely to be approved as less than half of the construction was completed so far.
The government has already convinced Saudi Fund for Development and OPEC Fund for International Development to increase the amount of the project aid, the officials said.
The revised project aid is likely to be raised at Tk 776. crore from Tk 572.2 crore while the government is likely increase its funding to Tk 442.7 crore from Tk 200.4 crore.
Immediate-past planning commission member Arastoo Khan said that new components had been added to the project increasing length of the flyover.
He said that the Planning Commission had already reviewed the proposals.
A number of private contractors appointed by the Local Government and Engineering Department have been implementing the project in Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar and Tejgaon areas since 2012.
The Moghbazar intersection part of the flyover is being constructed by Simplex-Navana JV. MCCC -Toma JV Ltd is constructing the Mouchak intersection part. Banglamotor-Moghbazar-Mouchak interconnection portion is being constructed by MCCC-SEL-UDC JV.
Local Government and Engineering Department officials said Toma Construction and Co Ltd, led by Ataur Rahman Bhuiya, is implementing the major portion of the project.
People of the areas have been suffering because of delay in completing the project. The miseries worsen in the wet season.
Huge traffic congestion in key intersections of the areas due to insufficient spaces and construction materials is constant pain for them.
The project was supposed to be completed by December 2014. Its extended deadline expired on December 31, 2015.
