HC orders replacing faulty manhole covers in 15 days

The High Court on Tuesday ordered both Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation to replace faulty covers of manholes across the capital in fifteen days.
The court also asked the secretary of local government ministry, mayors of two city corporations, chairman of WASA and director general of fire service and civil defence to explain why the court would not order to compensate families of children Junayed and Sanjida, who died falling into sewerage lines through open manholes, with Tk 20 lakh each.
The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order hearing a public interest litigation filed by Supreme Court lawyaer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan.
On July 22, Junayeed died falling into a sewerage line near Dhaka Commerce College at Mirpur and on July 15 Sanjida died falling into a sewerage line beside Mohakhali bus terminal.
