Awami League won 53 chairman posts while its archrival Bangladesh Nationalist Party took nine posts in 79 union parishads out of total 400 that went to polls on Monday.

The results of the 79 chairman posts reached the Election Commission secretariat from across the country by Tuesday afternoon.

As per the EC's fact-sheet, independent candidates won 15 chairman posts while HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party captured two chairman posts.

Some 400 UPs went to polls and by-polls across the country on Monday but elections to chairman posts were not held in many UPs.

Nearly 14,000 voters from 100 of the 111 exchanged ex-enclaves situated in the three northern districts had franchise in the 22 UPs, said officials at the Election Commission secretariat.

According to EC statistics, a total of 8,935 voters from ex-enclaves had their franchise in the UP elections in Panchagarh, while some 1,700 voters in eight UPs in Lalmonirhat and 3,098 in six UPs in Kurigram.

In some 200 UPs, elections were held in a few polling stations where the voting was earlier cancelled during the staggered countrywide UP elections held earlier this year.

Full-fledged election was held in 59 UPs, while there were by-elections in 67 UPs.

Some 65 UPs went to polls as two candidates bagged equal votes in the countrywide UP elections.
