WAR CRIMES TRIAL: Azhar verdict Tuesday

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday said it would deliver the verdict on war crimes case against Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam on Tuesday. ‘Judgement tomorrow,’ announced the chairman of the ICT-1 Justice M Enayetur Rahim. Earlier, the tribunal on September 18 had completed the war crimes trial of Azhar and kept the verdict CAV. CAV, the abbreviation of curia advisari vult, a Latin legal term, means the court keeps the verdict waiting. Azhar, 61, was tried on six counts of crimes against humanity that he allegedly committed at different places in Rangpur during the Liberation War. During the trial, 19 prosecution witnesses and one defence witnesses testified. On November 12, 2013, Azhar was indicted on six charges of genocide, killings, arson attacks, abduction and other crimes against humanity he allegedly committed in 1971. He was also tried on the charge of his superior war crimes responsibility. In 1971, Azhar committed the crimes as the then president of Rangpur unit of Islami Chhatra Sangha, as the student wing of Jamaat was then called and also as the Al-Badr Bahini commander in Rangpur, according to the prosecution. Hailing from Batasan Lohanipara village in Badarganj upazila in Rangpur, Azhar was a student of Rangpur Carmichael College during the Liberation War, it said.
