3 corruption cases: HC assigns new bench to hear Khaleda’s petitions

The Chief Justice, Surendra Kumar Sinha, on Wednesday assigned a new High Court bench to hear and dispose of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s petitions challenging the proceedings of NIKO, GATCO and Barapukuria Coalmine corruption cases. Khaleda’s petitions involving those corruption cases were posted on the Wednesday’s cause list of the new bench— comprised of justice Md Nuruzzaman and Justice Zafar Ahmed—for hearing. The High Court of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan on April 5 sent all three petitions to the Chief Justice as her counsel earlier moved those applications expressing ‘no confidence’ in the bench. Before passing the order, Khaleda’s counsel Bodruddoza Badal had requested the court not to pronounce the verdict in Barapukuria case, unless Khaleda’s no confidence petition was disposed of by the chief justice. As appeals for adjournment of the hearing were rejected repeatedly, Khaleda on March 11 filed a petition expressing ‘no confidence’ in the bench and sought that the case should be transferred to another bench.
