24 killed in Faridpur bus accident

At least 24 people were killed while 24 others injured in a bus accident at Purba Sadardi on Dhaka-Barisal highway in Faridpur early Thursday.The victims included five women and a child.Bhanga highway officer-in-charge, Md Hossain Sardar, said the accident took place around 1:30am when a speedy Kuakata-bound bus of Shonartori Paribahan hit a roadside tree before falling into a ditch.20 passengers died on the spot.The injured were rushed to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College and Hospital where four others succumbed to their injuries, he said.Quoting the passengers, Faridpur fire service deputy director, Khandaker Shamsuzzoha, said the accident might have occurred because the driver fell asleep.
