COUNCILLOR POLLS

Over 20 Awami League’s rebel general councillor candidates have won in the two city corporations elections in Dhaka while only eight from Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed councillor candidates won, though the party boycotted the election halfway into the polling. Ruling Awami League blessed councillor candidates were elected from the rest of the wards. According to the results, 38 AL-supported coucillor candidates, 10 AL rebel candidates and six BNP-backed candidates won in the Dhaka south while 19 AL-supported coucillor candidates, 12 AL rebel candidates and two BNP-backed candidates won in the Dhaka north city corporation. BNP backed candidates include Md Golam Hossain for ward 4, Rafiqul Islam Rasel for ward 31, Abdus Shahed Mantu for ward 44 and Abdul Kadir for ward 45. AL’s rebel candidates include Md Hasibur Rahman for ward 26, Md Billal Shah for ward 32, Mohammad Awal Hosain for ward 33, Md Afzal Hossain Siddiqui for ward 34, Md Abu Sayed for ward 35, Mohammad Selim for ward 42 and Md Arif Hossain for ward 43. Election results of three wards in Dhaka south has been kept suspended as widespread violence stopped polling in many polling stations.
