Khaleda calls on govt to release BNP men.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Wednesday demanded the release of leaders and activists of the opposition through immediate withdrawal of ‘politically-vindictive false cases’ and expedite the release of ailing senior leaders. She urged the ruling party to immediately restore an atmosphere of political
co-existence and healthy and normal competition.Khaleda made the demands through a press statement signed by her press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan. The BNP chief alleged that the course of law, investigation and the process of trial were now completely dependent on the willingness of the ruling party. No scope has been left for state institutions to fairly carry out their responsibilities, she said. She said jailed leaders falling ill due to negligence of treatment and then dying would not have happened if the law had taken its own course, and rule of law and justice existed in the country. She said the path to seeking justice through the law had shrunk.Khaleda said the basic right of securing bail had become jeopardised because of strong opposition of the government. She said those seeking bail to go abroad for urgent treatment were also being denied it.

‘I urge you to leave behind such inhumane behavior,’ she said. She said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, vice-president Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP chairperson’s advisers MA Mannan, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Mosaddek Ali, the party leaders Lutfuzzaman Babar, Aslam Chowdhury, Abdus Salam Pintu and Ariful Huq Chowdhury, among others, and other opposition leaders, were in jail for a long time. Many of them have been detained without trial on false charges, because of political vendetta, framed by a subservient Anti-Corruption Commission, to suppress the opposition, she said. She alleged many of the detained political prisoners faced physical and mental torture repeatedly having been placed on remand ‘illegally’ and ‘intentionally’.Many of the elderly suffered from various diseases and fell ill for want of proper treatment in jails, she said, adding that BNP leader Nasir Uddin Pintu recently died in Rajshahi jail due to ‘cruel’ negligence of the authorities.Khaleda said seriously ill Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was recently sent back to prison without being provided treatment while no treatment was provided to Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain after he became unconscious and fell in the bathroom.
