JU expels 5 BCL men for sexual harassment.

The Jahangirnagar University authorities on Saturday expelled five activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League on charge of sexually harassing a female student during Pahela Baishakh celebrations on the campus..
University registrar Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed that the decision was made at a syndicate meeting with vice-chancellor Farzana Islam in the chair at around 8:30pm following the recommendation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Cell.
The expelled are Chhatra League JU unit executive committee member Nishat Islam Bijoy, also journalism and media studies department 3rd year student, publicity secretary Nafis Iqbal, also chemistry department 3rd year student, and Chhatra League activists Rakib Hasan, geography department 2nd year student Nurul Kabir, environment department 2nd year student and Abdur Rahman Ifti, anthropology department.2nd year student.
Earlier, the authority also suspended eight students and JU unit Chhatra League expelled five leaders and activists for their alleged involvement in the incident.
On April 16, a female student of JU was sexually harassed by some BCL activists while returning to her hall after celebrating the Bangla New Year in the evening.
The victim submitted a written complaint to the vice-chancellor and proctor.
Nipiraner Birruddhey Jahangirnagar, a platform of students against harassment, who had been demonstrating since April 17, brought out a victory procession on the campus on Saturday.
