Struggle to continue until BD freed from evil forces: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday vowed to continue her government’s struggle until the country was freed from the clutches of evil forces, and urged all irrespective of their differences in opinion to remain united.‘We occasionally could see the ominous signs like arson, vandalism, burning people to death despite being human beings…but we’ll surely free Bangladesh from the clutches of the evil forces. Our struggle
will continue until we free it,’ she said.
The prime minister was addressing a function marking the inauguration of the observance of 116th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at national level at Comilla Town Hall Ground.
Reiterating her government’s plan for decentralisation of power, she said another new division would be set up in greater Comilla for which she wanted the people of Comilla to do good works always.
She recalled that Nazrul had always been very vocal against destructive acts, but the people of the country had to experience such things as the common people remained hostage for 92 days since January 5 since the BNP-led 20-party alliance enforced hartal and transport blockade programmes.
The prime minister urged all, irrespective of their differences opinion, to remain united and thus take the benefits of independence to the doorsteps of the common people.
Terming Bangladesh a role model of development, Hasina said the country’s reputation needs to be protected abroad.
Describing Nazrul as the source of inspiration and spirit of the Bengali nation, she said the great poet showed the path of moving ahead.
The prime minister also vowed to work together for the country’s development imbued with the non-communal spirit of Nazrul and build a hunger and poverty free mid-income country by 2021 and a prosperous developed country by 2041.
About the ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan that had encouraged the whole country during the War of liberation, Hasina said Bangabandhu had picked that slogan from a poem of Nazrul Islam although many had criticised it as being a ‘Hinduani Slogan’.
Putting utmost importance on protecting the memories of Nazrul, Hasina listed various steps of her government in this regard.
Paying her rich tributes to Nazrul, she said the national programme on the occasion of 116th birth anniversary of Nazrul was being observed in Comilla, which carries many memories of the poet.
Hasina said Comilla had a very special place in the life of Nazrul as he passed a very significant time of his life in Comilla. ‘More importantly, Nazrul married Ashalata Sengupta Promila, a daughter of Comilla. Another girl, Nargis, whom Nazrul loved first, was also from Comilla.’
The prime minister said, ‘It’s our duty to show respect to the national poet. The Awami League, whenever came to power, took various steps to preserve the memories of Nazrul and promote practice of the literary work of Nazrul.’
