Modi to visit Dhaka June 6-7

The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, is scheduled for June 6 to arrive in Dhaka for the first-time on a two-day state visit at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
The announcement of the visit was made simultaneously from the two capitals on Tuesday.Modi would hold official talks with Hasina at the Prime Minister’s Office.Officials of the two sides are working on signing about five agreements on issues including trade, coastal shipping, Dhaka-Shillong bus service, Kolkata-Agartala bus service, and a new Line of Credit from India worth at least $1 billion, said officials concerned.
About seven protocols on different issues including a Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade between Bangladesh and India incorporating a provision for inclusion of trade with ‘third countries’ like Nepal and Bhutan, Dhaka-Shillong bus service, Kolkata-Agartala bus service, and a protocol between the University of Dhaka and the SAARC University based in New Delhi are expected to be signed during the visit, they said.
Modi would also pay a courtesy call to the president, Md Abdul Hamid, at Bangabhaban.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, and the leader of the opposition in parliament, Raushan Ershad, are expected to separately call on Modi.
‘The visit is expected to further strengthen the excellent relationship between the two countries,’ the foreign ministry said in a release.
This visit ‘reflects the importance attached by India to the bilateral relationship’ an Indian external affairs ministry release said.
‘The visit is expected to further expand the cordial and cooperative relationship between the two countries and strengthen the ties of friendship and trust between India and Bangladesh,’ it said.
Modi is scheduled for June 7 to leave Dhaka.
