None can ignore us now: PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Friday said that she was not only focusing on further development of Bangladesh but also on the progress of the region through strengthening regional cooperation.‘The region has now only one enemy and that is poverty. We need concerted efforts to eliminate this enemy from the region,’ she said in a mass reception accorded her by Jatiya Nagarik Committee at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the afternoon for her achievements, including the land boundary agreement with India. The prime minister said that Bangladesh was once called a ‘bottomless basket’ but the country was no more ‘bottomless’ rather its basket was now full of development.‘Once people abroad used to ignore us because of the plunder of economy
after 1975 but now nobody ignores us as the development we have accomplished has surpassed that of many other nations,’ she said.

She termed the ratification of land boundary agreement by the Indian parliament 41 years after Bangladesh ratified it as a political success of her government.
‘It has been possible only because of strengthening of the bilateral relations and continued efforts to maintain good relations with the neighbouring countries,’ she added.
Hasina, also the Awami League president, said that her government had set an example before the world by resolving outstanding problems with its neighbours by maintaining good relations.
She said that her government had formulated a perspective plan with elaborate programmes for development to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income nation by 2021 and a developed nation by 2041 to materialise the dream of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The prime minister said she hoped the country would be able to achieve the target adding that she was ready to sacrifice anything for the welfare of the nation.

At the reception, Jatiya Nagarik Committee convener Syed Shamsul Haque proposed to introduce ‘Deshratna’ before the name of Sheikh Hasina.
He said that Sheikh Hasina was accorded the reception for her success in leading the nation towards a height that the country’s founding president dreamt of.
Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman read out the citation while eminent citizens, including Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Atiur Rahman, Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury, Anupom Sen, Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Muntasir Mamun and cricketer Akram Khan addressed the programme.
