SC begins SQ Chy war crimes appeal hearing

The Appellate Division on Tuesday began hearing of death row inmate Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s appeal in his war crimes case. SQ Chowdhury’s lawyer SM Shajahan started reading out the International Crimes Tribunal-1 verdict that sentenced him to death for war crimes on October 1 in 2013. The four member bench headed by the chief justice SK Sinha started the hearing after rejecting SQ Chowdhury’s petition for adjournment of the hearing for four weeks. Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader SQ Chowdhury’s senior lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain sought the adjournment stating that they needed the certified copy of the tribunal’s order. Meanwhile, the chief justice asked the court officials to provide Salauddin Quader all the copies of the tribunal orders on the war crimes case immediately. The tribunal on October 1 in 2013 awarded him death penalty for committing crimes against humanity in Chittagong. Later on October 29, SQ Chowdhury filed his appeal against the tribunal verdict.
