HC grants Latif Siddique bails in 10 more cases

The High Court on Tuesday granted interim bails for six months to detained ruling Awami League MP Abdul Latif Siddique in 10 more cases filed against him for hurting ‘religious sentiments.’ A bench of Justice Md Nizamul Huq and Justice Farid Ahmed Shibli also stayed for six months the proceedings in the cases. Seven of the cases were filed with a Chittagong court and three were filed in Dhaka, Laxshmipur and Chapainawabganj. The bench passed the order after hearing separate bail petitions of Latif Siddique. Later, his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua told reporters that there was no bar now to release his client. Later, deputy attorney general AKM Moniruzzman Kabir, who appeared for the state, told reporters that Latif Siddique was wanted in four more similar cases. Jyotirmoy said that Latif was not shown arrested in those cases. On May 26, the same bench granted interim bails to Latif Siddique in seven other cases. The court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate sent Latif to jail on November 25, 2014 after he was sacked as a minister and expelled from AL. For the derogatory remarks about Islam and the prime minister’s son he made at a reception at New York on September 28 last year, Latif drew wide spread condemnation and several lawsuits.
