HSC ADMISSION : Errors in recording grades delay merit list

The education boards missed three deadlines since Thursday in declaring the first merit list for college enrollments due to errors in recording grades of 26 per cent of the admission seekers, said a senior official of the Dhaka Education Board. This year 11.56 lakh students applied for admission into HSC classes. On behalf of the 10 education boards, Dhaka Education Board is handing the admission issue, with technical support from BUET. Another reason for missing the deadlines was failure to run the computerized data processing system, said Dhaka board. On Saturday the authorities announced that the merit list would be declared today. A senior official of the Dhaka Education Board said that the decision to postpone the merit list declaration was taken after the errors in recording the grades, mostly of physical studies, was noticed. The erroneous recording shows discrepancies between Letter Grades and grade point average of the admission seekers in several subjects, mostly physical studies. Several parents complained that though their children scored GPA-5 in physical studies the Dhaka board erroneously recorded that they scored GPA-4. The children of this group of complainants completed SSC from Mohammadpur Preparatory Higher Secondary Girls’ School and Dhaka Residential Model College. Education ministry secretary Nazrul Islam Khan, however, dismissed the allegation saying that he was not aware about such errors. He said that the merit list could not be declared due failure of BUET to run the computerized data processing programme. ‘We will declare the merit list on Sunday’ he said. The merit list, originally scheduled to be declared on Thursday, was rescheduled twice and the boards missed them again on Friday and Saturday. HSC colleges are set to enrol students on the basis of their SSC results without late fees until June 30 and with late fees until July 26. News Courtesy: www.newagebd.net
