Most political parties yet to submit audit reports to EC

Most of the political parties including Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party are yet to submit their audit reports for 2014 to the Election Commission when the last date for submitting the reports is July 31.
Out of 40 registered parties, only two — Bangladesh Muslim League and Workers Party of Bangladesh — have submitted their reports to the commission, EC officials told New Age on Monday.
The ruling Awami League, however, on Sunday filed an application with the commission seeking one more month for submitting the report, the officials said.
About the time extension, election commissioner Md Shah Newaz told New Age that the commission had the authority to extend the time and it would be considered if any party would plead for time.
‘The commission will extend the time for the parties which will submit application within July 31. We [EC] want reports from the parties; some days before or after are not a big matter,’ he said.
On Sunday, Awami League central sub-committee joint secretary ABM Rezaul Kabir submitted the application to Election Commission’s joint secretary Jesmin Tuli, the commission officials said.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon told New Age that the audit report of the party would be signed by the party secretary general but he was now abroad for treatment.
‘We [BNP] will submit an application to Election Commission tomorrow [Tuesday] seeking time tension,’ he said.
Jatiya Party secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu told New Age that his party was preparing the report and would submit it to the commission within a day or two.
On June 18, Election Commission asked the 40 registered political parties to submit their audit reports for 2014 by July 31.
Meanwhile, no letter was sent to Jamaat-e Islami as the High Court cancelled its registration.
The letter was sent to the
general secretary or secretary general of each political party registered with the commission.
According to the Political Parties Registration Rules 2008, a party has to get its total transactions on a calendar year audited by a chartered accounting firm and submit a copy of the firm’s report to the commission by July 31 of the subsequent year.
As per the article 90H (1) (c) of the Representation of the People Order, the registration of a political party may be cancelled if it fails to submit the audit report in time for three consecutive
