Deep depression turns cyclonic storm Komen: Danger signal No 7 in 7 districts, 2 ports

All maritime ports in Bangladesh have been asked to hoist danger signal number 7 as cyclonic storm Komen is likely to hit six southern districts by this afternoon, a special weather bulletin of the Met office said Wednesday night.
The deep depression over the Northeast Bay and adjoining Bangladesh coast moved slightly north-northeastwards over the same area and intensified into a cyclonic storm, ‘Komen.’
The cyclone Komen crossed Saint Martin Island at about 11:00pm on Wednesday with heavy rains and wind lasting for half an hour, local officials said.
Saint Martin union council chairman Nurul Amin said that residents moved to cyclone shelters. No causalities were reported so far, coast guard official told New Age.
Local administration announced the closure of all educational institutes in Cox’s Bazar for today.
The cyclone centred at 6:00am on Thursday about 75km southwest of Chittagong port, 80km northwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 200km east-southeast of Mongla port and 115km southeast of Payra port, a met office special bulletin said.
The bulletin said that the storm was likely to move in east-northeasterly direction and may cross Chittagong coast by noon today.
Under its influence squally weather is continuing over the North Bay, adjoining coastal area of Bangladesh and the maritime ports.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 54km of the cyclone centre is about 62km per hour rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the system centre.
The maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to lower local warning signal number four but instead hoist danger signal number seven.
The coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number seven.
The maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower local warning signal number four but instead hoist danger signal number five.
The coastal districts of Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira, and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number five.
Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira, and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
The coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira, and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 70-90 kph in gusts/ squalls with heavy to very heavy falls during the passage of the system.
Because of very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong division.
All fishing boats, trawlers and marine vessels over the North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
