Yet another child tortured to death

A 12-year-old boy was killed in torture by his former employer in Khulna on Monday night for switching to another motor garage.
Protesting against the killing of the boy, Mohammod Rakib, 12, son of Mohammod Alam of Tootpara central road under Khulna sadar police station, agitated local people caught three people – motor garage owner Mintu Mian, 40, its caretaker Sharif Ahmed and his mother Beauty Begum, 50, – and handed them over to the police.
Sadar police station officer-in-charge Sukumar Biswas said that Mintu and Sharif were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital prison cell as they were beat up by the agitated locals, who also blocked roads at Tootpara protesting against the killing.
The murder came less than a month after another boy, Samiul Alam Rajon, was tortured to death in Sylhet on July 8.
The victim family, locals and the police said that Rakib, son of a hawker, worked at Mintu’s garage at Tootpara for about one year and he switched to another garage in PTI intersection on August 1.
As Rakib was passing by Mintu’s garage at about 7:30pm on Monday, he was called in the garage and tortured and air was pumped through his rectum, they said.
Locals rescued Rakib in a critical condition and rushed him to a nearby clinic from where doctors referred him the Khulna Medical College Hospital, they said.
They said that doctors at the hospital referred him to Dhaka, but Rakib succumbed to the injuries at about 10:30pm on Monday, when the ambulance carrying him just left the hospital for Dhaka.
The agitated locals caught Mintu, Sharif and Beauty and handed them over to the police at about 11:30pm after beating Mintu and Shairf up, Sukumar said.
He said that Beauty was arrested as she was also p[resent at the garage during the torture.
Locals also blocked roads at Tootpara on Tuesday morning protesting against the torture and killing.
Rakib’s body was brought to Tootpara central road at about 3:00pm on Tuesday after post mortem examination. He was buried at Tootpara graveyard after Namaz-e-janaza at Tootpara Central Jame Mosque compound.
Khulna deputy commissioner gave the victim family Tk 10,000 for the burial.
Khulna-2 lawmaker Mizanur Rahman Mizan and leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, the Communist Party of Bangladesh and different professional organisations visited the victim family to express their sympathy.
Mohammod Alam lodged filed a murder case with Sadar thana at about 11:30am on Tuesday naming Mintu, Sharif and Beauty. Sub-inspector Kazi Moshtaque Ahmed was assigned to investigate the case.
Rakib’s father Mohammod Alam and mother Lucky Begum said that he had to quit the job at Mintu’s garage because of irregular payment wages and misbehaviour of Mintu and Sharif.
