Receding floodwater leaves many under open sky

Floodwater has receded further in the north and central parts of the country, leaving affected people to suffer for lack of funds with which to mend their damaged homesteads.
Affected people, especially the poor, in Bogra and Kurigram, have said as water began to recede, they started going back to their homes from shelters but most of their houses have been damaged badly and need repairs.
They said many of them got some rice as relief but did not get any cash to repair their houses.
As a result, they said, they would have to borrow money to repair their houses and run their families in the
days to come.
Many of them have said they are now living under the open sky as they are now in no position to repair their homesteads.
The flood forecasting and warning centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board said on Tuesday morning that all the major river systems were in falling trend which might continue in the next five days.
In the next 5 days, it forecasted, the overall flood situation in places of the north, central and northeastern region of the country might continue to improve.
Our Bogra correspondent reports: poor people in the severely flood-affected Sariyakandi and Sonatal upazilas sought help from either the government or from non-governmental organisations to repair and rebuild their damaged houses.
During a visit to the affected village of Boyrakandi, Chandanbaisha, Ghughumari and Sheikhpara, villagers who had taken shelter on roads for over three weeks were found returning to their houses and trying to make them livable.
Siddik Mia, resident of village Adbaira under Sariyakandi, told New Age that his family was now passing days under the open sky as he was not in a position to repair his house which was damaged badly remaining under water for 22 days.
‘I have been passing days in my damaged house as I cannot repair it for want of money,’ Saidur Rahman of village Amtali under Sonatala upazila said.
Shamsul Huq, a villager of Maheshpara of the same upazila, said he was trying to arrange loan to repair his house to make it livable.
He said it would be a great help for the villagers like him if the government or any other organisation would come to them with financial help.
