CMCH nurses stage work abstention for 3.30 hours
The nurses at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital staged work abstention for about three hours and a half from 7:00pm on Tuesday after a group of intern doctors allegedly attacked them.
The work abstention put the hospital services in disarray, particularly attending the BM Inland Container Depot fire victims.
The nurses, however, returned to their work at about 10:30pm after a meeting with the hospital and the medical college authorities, said Chattogram Medical College principal Shahena Akter.
‘We will form a committee on Wednesday to investigate the incident. Actions will be taken against those involved in the incident,’ she said.
A faction of interns led by Emon Sikder, Towfiqur Rahman and Md Jamshed reportedly attacked the caregivers at about 7:00pm following an altercation with a nurse, said Mujibul Hoque, a witness.
After the attack, all the nurses of the hospital stopped providing health services to the patients.
A nurse Dipti Mollik said that an intern attacked Aklima Akter, a nurse, at ward 26 following an altercation.
When the other nurses came forward to save Aklima, the intern doctors started beating the other nurses altogether, explained Dipti.
The faction is led by Emon Sikder, Towfiqur Rahman and Md Jamshed, she said.
Intern Emon Sikder could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
The CMCH officials later held a meeting with the intern doctors and the nurses over the issue and the nurses agreed to go back to their works as they were assured that punitive measures would be taken against those responsible for the attacks on the nurses.
Nazim Uddin Mazumder, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish police station, told New Age that they tried to resolve the matter.
Over 1500 patients, including the BM Inland Container Depot fire victims, were undergoing treatment at the hospital on Tuesday.
