Preservation of Old Dhaka historic sites demanded

Local people formed a human chain in front of Mitford Hospital in the capital on Friday demanding preservation of historic places and buildings of Old Dhaka.
The human chain was organised by voluntary organisation Urban Study Group.
The organisers demanded that the government should take effective steps soon to acquire and preserve the historical sites mainly Bara Katara, Chota Katara and Ruplal House, which were about to be demolished.
Various high-rises are being constructed around Chota Katara while Ruplal House has been turned into vegetable market, they said.
They urged the concerned authorities to compensate the owners of these buildings for protecting the country’s
history.
In the last seven years, more than 500 historic buildings in Old Dhaka, the historic core of the capital, have been demolished, they said.
